Health Focus: Toxins on Your Nails

It's not often that we think about toxins in beauty products. For the most part, consumers believe that such products are harmless to the body. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. The EPA released a guide designed to help protect workers at nail salons from being over-exposed to toxins that exist in nail salon products. We've outlined several of the common toxins that are used at nail salons and the harmful effects they can have on your body.

Common Toxins Found in Nail Salon Products:
Acetone (nail polish remover)
Can cause headaches, dizziness, irritation to skin and eyes, loss of appetite, inability to sleep, and depression.
n-Butyl acetate (nail polish)
Can cause irritation to eyes, skin, nose, mouth, and throat,
headache, drowsiness, confusion and/or haziness.
sec-Butyl acetate (nail polish)
Can cause irritation to eyes, skin, nose, mouth, and throat,
headache, drowsiness, confusion and/or haziness.
tert-Butyl acetate (nail polish)
Can cause irritation to eyes, skin, nose, mouth, and throat,
headache, drowsiness, confusion and/or haziness.
Camphor (nail polish)
Can cause irritation to eyes, skin, and nose, nausea, vomiting,
diarrhea, headache, dizziness, and uncontrollable muscle contractions.
Di-n-butyl phthalate (nail polish, nail hardener, nail base, nail top coat, nail thickener)
Can cause irritation to eyes, mouth, nose, throat, and
stomach.
Ethyl acetate (nail polish and fingernail glue)
Can cause irritation to eyes, skin, nose, throat, skin rash,
confusion and/or haziness.
Ethyl ether (nail polish remover and fingernail glue remover)
Can cause irritation to eyes, skin, nose, mouth, throat, and
lungs, headaches, drowsiness, confusion and/or haziness, nausea, and vomiting.
Formaldehyde (nail polish and nail hardener)
Can cause cancer, irritation to eyes, nose, throat, and lungs, and runny eyes.
Nitrocellulose (nail polish)
Can cause increased heart rate, clumsiness, nausea, and vomiting.
Titanium dioxide (nail polish)
Can cause cancer and permanent scarring of the lungs.
Toluene (nail polish and fingernail glue)
Can cause irritation to eyes and nose, weakness, exhaustion,
confusion, dizziness, headache, pupils dilation, teary eyes, anxiety, muscle fatigue, inability to sleep, feelings of numbness, burning, skin rash, liver and kidney damage.
